Introduction: Nursing education requires pedagogical strategies capable of articulating theory and practice while promoting the development of technical, ethical, human, and critical-reflective competencies. In this context, technical visits are relevant teaching-learning tools, as they bring students closer to the reality of health services and different care settings. Objective: To report the experience of nursing students during a technical visit to a specialized institution caring for people with neurological disabilities, complex neurological conditions, and special health care needs. Methods: Descriptive-reflective experience report based on the experience of nursing students during a technical visit to a specialized institution located in the Porto Alegre region, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Results: The experience enabled students to observe institutional organization, multidisciplinary teamwork, and the nurse’s role in care coordination and supervision. Students followed activities related to hygiene, feeding, rehabilitation, comfort, and comprehensive care for residents. Initial feelings of insecurity and emotional impact were gradually reinterpreted through reflections on empathy, humanization, bonding, and comprehensive care. Conclusion: The technical visit broadened students’ understanding of care provided in specialized institutions and prompted reflections on technical, ethical, human, and critical-reflective dimensions of nursing education.
