Abstract

Introduction: Inguinal hernia stands out as a fairly common condition in surgery, manifesting as the protrusion of a part of the intestine or abdominal tissue through a weakened area in the abdominal muscles, especially in the groin region. Objective: This study described the profile of individuals hospitalized for inguinal hernia in the state of Minas Gerais, correlating it with the importance of postoperative rehabilitation. Methods: This is a retrospective and quantitative approach; the data source used will be linked to DATASUS, through the SUS hospital morbidity data, adopting inclusion and exclusion criteria, and subsequently tabulating the data. Results: In 10 years, Minas Gerais recorded 159,823 hospitalizations for inguinal hernia, predominantly among individuals aged 60 to 69, of mixed race, male, and elective in nature. The increase in life expectancy and the higher proportion of elderly people favor the development of inguinal hernias, as degenerative changes in the abdominal wall, decreased tissue elasticity, and the presence of related chronic diseases increase the risk of developing the condition. Conclusion: Rehabilitation through physiotherapy is fundamental for functional recovery, prevention of potential complications, strengthening of abdominal muscles, improvement of physical condition, and a safe return to daily and professional activities.
