Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for pain and quality of life in women with endometriosis: A narrative review

Abstract

Introduction: Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease characterized by the presence of endometrium-like tissue that grows outside the uterine cavity, often associated with chronic pelvic pain, which can affect quality of life. Objective: To summarize the scientific evidence on transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) interventions used for pain control and quality of life improvement in women with endometriosis. Methods: This is a narrative literature review. Studies conducted in women with endometriosis (≥18 years) that used TENS as an intervention and assessed pain and/or quality of life were considered. All languages ​​were included. The information sources were CINAHL, EMBASE, Google Scholar, LILACS, MEDLINE, PEDro, Web of Science, Cybertesis, NDLTD (via Global ETD Search), OATD, Clinical Trials, and Cochrane CENTRAL, from inception to May 2022. Results: A total of 3 studies were selected, out of 246 records identified, with a combined sample of 165 women with endometriosis. The articles reported the use of conventional TENS, acupuncture-like TENS, and burst TENS. Conclusion: TENS interventions were applied mainly to the lumbosacral region, with frequencies ranging from 2 to 85 Hz, intensity adjusted to a tolerable sensory level for the patient, pulse duration from ~75 μs to ~260 μs, in continuous mode, with sessions lasting 20 to 30 minutes. These parameters produced significant results for women with deep endometriosis, as they not only increased pain tolerance from the first sessions but also consequently improved quality of life.
