Abstract

Introduction: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing, also known as ergospirometry, is a global and non-invasive method used to evaluate the body’s integrated response to exercise, through the systematic analysis of the respiratory, cardiovascular, hematopoietic, neuropsychological, and musculoskeletal systems. Objective: was described the indications, main factors involved in the performance and interpretation of the tests ergospirometry and the role of ergospirometry in physical activity among adolescents. Methods: Literature Review. A search was conducted in the electronic databases of Medical Publications (PubMed), Cochrane Library, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) were searched without date restriction, using the following keywords: “Maximum cardiorespiratory capacity,” “Adolescent athletes,” “Football,” “Ergospirometry test,” “Physical exercise,” “Exercise test,” “Performance,” and “Sports.” The Boolean operators AND OR were used, and studies that investigated the indications, main factors involved in the performance and interpretation of the tests, and the role of ergospirometry in physical activity among athletes were included. Results: Ergospirometry is the gold standard for evaluating physical exercise responses in adolescents; however, it faces several challenges, such as the high cost of conducting the test. Conclusion: Understanding the role of ergospirometry in the assessment of adolescent athletes helps health professionals from different fields to optimize the proper prescription of physical exercise. Furthermore, it serves as an important tool to determine the actual functional capacity of athletes.
