Does inspiratory muscle strengthening modify the hemodynamic response caused by handgrip?: protocol of a comparative intervention study

Abstract

Introduction: The hemodynamic response to isometric handgrip (HG) exercise is widely used to assess cardiovascular control. Inspiratory muscle resistance (IMR) may modulate this response through mechanisms, but the acute effects of combining IMR and HG remain unclear. Objective: To test the hypothesis whether inspiratory muscle resistance (IMR) modifies the acute hemodynamic response of static resistance exercise performed with the Handgrip (HG) device. Methods: This is a comparative intervention study composed of three intervention arms. Twenty-four male volunteers aged between 18 and 30 years will be recruited. After screening, the volunteers will be randomized to treatment protocols (A: HG at 60% of Handgrip Strength - HGS; II: HG at 60% of HGS + IMR, and III: with HG at 30% of HGS + IMR). The data will be presented by the variation (∆) of the sprint-rest and post-exercise-rest moments. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) will be performed in case of symmetric distribution and Kruskal-Wallys for nonparametric distribution to analyze the three protocols during the same phases and, subsequently, the same test will be used to evaluate individual responses over time. A p≤0.05 will be considered statistically significant. Conclusion: This study will provide answers to the hemodynamic effects caused by RMI in isometric activity performed with HG and, if the hypotheses of this study are confirmed, we will have robust mechanistic evidence to expand the field of scientific exploration in different clinical contexts.
