Ethical environment and nursing care in primary health care: A qualitative analysis

Introduction: In nursing, the ethical environment directly impacts the quality of care and the well-being of professionals. A favorable environment promotes patient independence and protection, while an adverse environment intensifies stress and Burnout Syndrome. Leadership contribution is crucial to consolidate workplace ethics. Objective: To analyze the influence of a positive ethical environment in nursing workplaces and its impacts on the quality of patient care. Methods: This is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study conducted with Nursing professionals in Primary Health Care. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews, recorded and transcribed, and subsequently analyzed using the Discursive Textual Analysis method. Sampling occurred through the snowball technique, respecting the ethical principles established by Resolution No. 466/12. Results: Professionals reported that ethical environments based on respect and collaboration increase motivation, trust, and patient safety. Conversely, situations involving disrespect, lack of dialogue, and institutional support weaken the team, generate stress, and may compromise care. The presence of ethical leadership was highlighted as a central factor in maintaining a healthy and productive climate. Conclusion: A positive ethical work environment strengthens team engagement and promotes humanized and safe care. Investing in respect, effective communication, and committed leadership contributes to the appreciation of nursing and the improvement of primary health care, while adverse environments can compromise both the quality of care and professionals’ well-being.
