The role of nursing in providing emotional support to women who have undergone mastectomies: A literature review

Introduction: Breast cancer is a malignant neoplasm with a high incidence worldwide and a significant impact on women's health, requiring interventions that go beyond traditional clinical treatment. Among these interventions, mastectomy, characterized by the partial or total removal of the breast, is widely used but entails profound repercussions, both physical and psychosocial. In this scenario, nursing plays a central role in offering emotional support to women undergoing the procedure, contributing to psychosocial rehabilitation and improving quality of life. Objective: This literature review describes the role of nursing in providing emotional support to women who have undergone mastectomy. Methods: A literature review was conducted using scientific publications from 2021 to 2025, available in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and National Library of Medicine's (PubMed) databases. Keywords in Portuguese and English such as "mastectomy," "breast neoplasms," "nursing," and "nursing care" were used. Studies were selected based on criteria of relevance, timeliness, and thematic contribution. Results: The analysis of the nine included articles indicates that mastectomy causes significant emotional impacts, such as fear, sadness, anxiety, and a feeling of loss of female identity. Nursing plays an essential role through welcoming, active listening, and encouragement of autonomy, using educational strategies, individualized follow-up, and support groups. Conclusion: The emotional support provided by nursing is crucial to strengthening self-esteem and assisting in coping with illness. The importance of humanized practices, interdisciplinary integration, and investments in professional development is highlighted.
